Prices checked October 2026.
Six used Porsches with a classic.com benchmark under $40,000. Each price is a CLASSIC.COM Market Benchmark (CMB). It describes a typical car in that group, not a quote for any single car, and classic.com says neither the CMB nor an average should be used as the exact value of a specific vehicle. Condition, transmission and records move real prices a lot, and every car here needs a Porsche specialist pre-purchase inspection.
If you want a 997, start with our 997.1 buyer's guide. We left the 997 off this list because classic.com shows no benchmark for the generation as a whole.
The list at a glance
| Car | Years | classic.com benchmark (Oct 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Boxster 986, base, automatic | 1997 to 2004 | $11,890 |
| Boxster 987.1, base, manual | 2005 to 2008 | $20,321 |
| Cayman 987.1, base, manual | 2006 to 2008 | $24,171 |
| Boxster 987.2, base, manual | 2009 to 2012 | $27,456 |
| 911 Carrera 996.2, Tiptronic coupe | 2002 to 2004 | $21,966 |
| Boxster 981, base | 2013 to 2016 | $35,286 |
1. Porsche Boxster 986 (base)
Years: 1997 to 2004. Benchmark: $11,890, base Boxster with automatic (classic.com).
The 986 is the cheapest way into a mid-engine Porsche here. Classic & Sports Car calls it a great and inexpensive way into Porsche ownership, with the caveat that maintenance costs can hit hard if the rare engine problems strike. The benchmark above is for automatics. We did not find a separate figure for base manuals, so check listings for the transmission you want.
See our 986 Boxster torque and maintenance reference and the 986 and 987 IMS bearing write-up before you shop.
What to inspect:
- Classic & Sports Car says intermediate shaft (IMS) bearing failure can afflict all 986s, so ask for the bearing history and a specialist inspection. Source.
- Head-gasket failure can be caused by water pump or drive belt failure, so ask whether the pump has been replaced. The guide also says to look for a cracked expansion tank leaking water into the trunk. Source.
2. Porsche Boxster 987.1 (base, manual)
Years: 2005 to 2008. Benchmark: $20,321 (classic.com).
The 987.1 keeps the naturally aspirated flat-six behind the seats and adds a newer cabin than the 986. PcarWise calls the early 987.1 a bargain next to the 986 but still lists engine bore scoring as an issue to check on the M97 engine.
Our 987 Boxster and Cayman reference covers routine jobs.
What to inspect:
- PcarWise says the M97 engines are famed for cylinder bore scoring, usually shown by a knock and heavy oil use, and that the only fix is a full rebuild. Ask a specialist about scoping the cylinders. Source.
- Check the water pump pulley for wobble with the engine running, and look at the front radiators and A/C condensers for debris and stone damage. Source.
- Air/oil separator failure shows up as cold-start smoke and a check engine light. Source.
3. Porsche Cayman 987.1 (base, manual)
Years: 2006 to 2008. Benchmark: $24,171 (classic.com).
The first base Cayman pairs the mid-engine chassis with a fixed roof, and classic.com lists a 2.7-liter flat-six for this market. It costs more than the same-generation Boxster in these benchmarks.
PcarWise publishes its 987 guide for the Boxster, not the Cayman, so treat the items below as questions for the specialist doing your inspection, not confirmed Cayman faults.
What to inspect:
- Ask whether the water pump has been replaced and check the front radiators for debris. PcarWise lists both for the 987 generation. Source.
- Ask for a cylinder bore scoring check. PcarWise lists it for the 987.1 M97 engine. Source.
4. Porsche Boxster 987.2 (base, manual)
Years: 2009 to 2012. Benchmark: $27,456 (classic.com).
The 987.2 uses the MA1 engine, a completely new design with direct injection that PcarWise describes as a non-IMS engine with significantly better reliability. Base cars have a 2.9-liter flat-six and a six-speed manual or PDK.
It removes the IMS question that hangs over the 986.
What to inspect:
- PcarWise says early MA1 engines had water pump and thermostat issues, and that the pump leaks before it fails. Ask whether the revised parts were fitted. Source.
- High oil consumption affected a good number of early 987.2 engines, typically a quart every 1,000 miles, according to the same guide. Check tailpipe soot and the dash fuel economy figure. Source.
5. Porsche 911 Carrera 996.2 (Tiptronic coupe)
Years: 2002 to 2004. Benchmark: $21,966 (classic.com).
The benchmark is for Tiptronic coupes. PcarWise calls the 996 Tiptronic generally very reliable and says fluid maintenance is critical, so ask for the service record.
Our 996 torque and maintenance reference and 996 IMS bearing article cover the main ownership questions.
What to inspect:
- PcarWise lists a single-row IMS bearing on the 3.6-liter M96 and says cars with the bearing replaced are worth more than ones without. Ask for the repair record. Source.
- The same guide says M96 engines are famed for cylinder bore scoring and that rebuilds on most Porsche engines cost north of $25,000. Source.
6. Porsche Boxster 981 (base)
Years: 2013 to 2016. Benchmark: $35,286 (classic.com).
The 981 is the newest car here and the most expensive. PcarWise lists it as the last naturally aspirated flat-six Boxster, with a 2.7-liter, 265 hp base engine and a six-speed manual or seven-speed PDK.
It is the only entry whose benchmark sits close to the $40,000 cap, so there is little room left for repairs.
What to inspect:
- PcarWise says early MA1 engines had water pump and thermostat issues, and that PDK maintenance is critical because a replacement transmission runs north of $20,000. Source.
- The 981 front radiators and A/C condensers sit low and exposed. Shine a flashlight into the intakes and look for leaves or damage. Source.
How we picked
We started with Porsche models and variants that have a classic.com market page, kept the ones with a benchmark under $40,000 in October 2026, and added a documented issue to check on each from the sources linked in each section. Benchmarks are not guaranteed purchase prices, and we did not verify any listing.
The Cayman items come from a Boxster guide, so confirm them with a specialist. See our other buying lists for more.
