Porsche 996 Common Torque Specifications (Maintenance and DIY Jobs)

Below is a comprehensive list of common torque specs for Porsche 996 (1998-2005) models, covering all major variants: Carrera, Carrera 4, Carrera 4S, Turbo, GT2, and GT3. Values are given in both ft-lbs and Nm, organized by category. Each item includes a source link for verification. Where sources conflict, we have flagged it so you can verify against your specific Workshop Manual (WSM) before proceeding.

Critical: The 996 Turbo, GT2, and GT3 use a dry-sump oiling system - fundamentally different from the Carrera integrated wet-sump. Do not follow Carrera oil procedures on these variants. Engine sections below are clearly separated by variant.

Variant Coverage

  • Carrera / C4 (996.1, 1998-2001): M96 3.4L flat-6, wet sump, IMS risk applies.

  • Carrera / C4 / C4S (996.2, 2002-2004): M96 3.6L flat-6, wet sump, IMS risk applies.

  • Turbo (2001-2005): M96/97 3.6L twin-turbo, dry sump, IMS risk applies.

  • GT2 (2002-2005): M96/97 3.6L twin-turbo, dry sump, IMS risk applies.

  • GT3 / GT3 RS (1999-2005): Mezger 3.6L GT1-derived, dry sump, NOT affected by IMS bearing issue.

Wheels and Tires

  • Wheel Lug Bolts (all 996 variants): 96 ft-lbs (130 Nm) pca.org - Factory spec for all 996 variants including Turbo, GT2, and GT3. Tighten in a star pattern and re-check after a short drive. Apply Optimoly TA to bolt threads only - do NOT apply to the spherical contact face.

Engine and Cooling - Carrera / C4 / C4S (M96, Wet Sump)

Applies to: 996.1 Carrera/C4 (1998-2001, 3.4L) and 996.2 Carrera/C4/C4S (2002-2004, 3.6L). Integrated wet-sump system with one oil drain plug on the sump pan.

  • Engine Oil Drain Plug: 37 ft-lbs (50 Nm) ecarguides.com - Always use a new crush washer.

  • Engine Oil Filter Housing Cap: 19 ft-lbs (26 Nm) ecarguides.com - Cap often has 25 Nm molded on it; 19 ft-lbs is the correct rounded equivalent. Do not over-tighten into aluminum.

  • Spark Plugs (new plug): 22 ft-lbs (30 Nm) pca.org - Reused plugs: 19 ft-lbs (25 Nm). Hand-thread fully before torquing. Do NOT use anti-seize (Porsche Technical Bulletin 9102).

  • Water Pump Bolts: 7.5 ft-lbs (10 Nm) fcpeuro.com - Tighten in a criss-cross pattern.

  • Thermostat Housing Bolts: 7.5 ft-lbs (10 Nm) rennlist.com - 6mm hex head bolts. Same 10 Nm applies to nearby coolant pipe bolts.

  • AOS (Air-Oil Separator) Mounting Bolts: 7.5 ft-lbs (10 Nm) renntech.org - Two bolts via 10mm deep socket. Grease O-rings with Kluber Syntheso Glep (Porsche p/n 000.043.204.68) on install.

  • Ignition Coil Pack Bolts: 7.5 ft-lbs (10 Nm) renntech.org - M6 into aluminum valve cover. Do not overtighten.

Engine and Cooling - Turbo / GT2 (M96/97, Dry Sump)

Dry-sump: drain oil from FOUR locations - oil tank, crankcase, and both turbo housings. Missing any location leaves dirty oil in the system.

  • Oil Tank Drain Plug: 44 ft-lbs (60 Nm) ecarguides.com - Main reservoir at front of car. New copper crush washer each time.

  • Crankcase Drain Plug: 52 ft-lbs (70 Nm) ecarguides.com - New aluminum crush washer each time.

  • Turbocharger Housing Drain Plugs (x2): 22 ft-lbs (30 Nm) ecarguides.com - One per turbo, both must be removed. New copper washers.

  • Oil Filter Housing Cap: 19 ft-lbs (25 Nm) 6speedonline.com

  • Spark Plugs: 22 ft-lbs (30 Nm) pca.org - Same spec as M96 Carrera. Do NOT use anti-seize.

Engine and Cooling - GT3 / GT3 RS (Mezger, Dry Sump)

The Mezger engine is derived from the 911 GT1 racing engine and is NOT affected by the IMS bearing issue.

  • Crankcase Oil Drain Plug: 44-52 ft-lbs (60-70 Nm) renntech.org - SOURCES CONFLICT: Porsche WSM specifies 44 ft-lbs (60 Nm); some DIY sources list 52 ft-lbs (70 Nm). Use 44 ft-lbs as conservative spec and verify against your WSM.

  • Spark Plugs: 22 ft-lbs (30 Nm) pca.org - Do NOT use anti-seize (Porsche Technical Bulletin 9102).

Drivetrain (Engine Mounts, Transmission and Exhaust)

  • Flywheel Bolts - M96 (TTY, one-time use): 19 ft-lbs (25 Nm) + 90 degrees additional rotation rennlist.com - Must be replaced every time flywheel is removed (IMS bearing or clutch). Never reuse TTY bolts.

  • Engine Mount Bolts (top, to chassis): 17 ft-lbs (23 Nm) renntech.org - M8 into aluminum. Do not overtighten.

  • Engine Mount Main Nut (bottom thru-bolt): 63 ft-lbs (85 Nm) fcpeuro.com - Large M12 nut at base of each mount.

  • Catalytic Converter Support Bracket Bolts: 17 ft-lbs (23 Nm) pelicanparts.com - 13mm bolts, snug to prevent exhaust stress cracking.

  • Manual Transmission Drain Plug: 22 ft-lbs (30 Nm) pca.org - New crush washer. Remove fill plug FIRST. (Some sources list 16-18 ft-lbs - PCA specifies 30 Nm. Verify against WSM if uncertain.)

  • Manual Transmission Fill Plug: 22 ft-lbs (30 Nm) pca.org - Same spec as drain. Remove first, tighten last.

  • Tiptronic ATF Drain Plug: 16 ft-lbs (22 Nm) ecarguides.com - MY2002+ 996.2 Tiptronic only. New drain plug seal each time.

Brakes

Reminder

We did our best to make this accurate and comprehensive, cross-referencing factory workshop manuals, Porsche Club of America technical Q&As, Rennlist, RennTech, Pelican Parts, FCP Euro, and eCarGuides. Each spec includes a source link - please verify before wrenching, especially on safety-critical fasteners.

As always, proceed at your own risk. Always use a calibrated torque wrench and consult a professional if you are unsure. When in doubt, refer to the official Porsche Workshop Manual. Happy wrenching!
