BMW E46 330i P0171 and P0174? Start with the air entering the engine after the mass-airflow sensor. A cracked intake boot, loose connection or crankcase-ventilation leak can make an M54 run lean. But BMW also identifies an incorrect air filter and a defective air-mass meter as possibilities. A code reports the condition; it does not identify the part to replace. BMW SI B12 20 07
Scope: North American E46 330i and 330xi sedans (2001-2005) and 330Ci coupe/convertible (2001-2006) with the M54B30 engine. The part-number examples come from the RealOEM U.S. E46 330i catalog and retailer fitment lists for 330-series M54B30 cars. Verify VIN, production date and engine before ordering. E46 325i M54B25 and M56 SULEV parts are not interchangeable by assumption.
What P0171, P0174, 2882 and 2883 mean
P0171 is generic OBD-II system too lean, bank 1; P0174 is bank 2. On the M54 inline-six, bank 1 covers cylinders 1-3 and bank 2 covers cylinders 4-6. BMW's 2882 and 2883 describe mixture-control faults on the corresponding banks. Save the exact codes and freeze-frame information before clearing anything. Sources: P0171, P0174, BMW SI B07 03 14, p. 3 (code labels only; this later bulletin covers other chassis).
Positive fuel-trim corrections mean the controller is adding fuel relative to its baseline. Unmetered intake air can cause this, but so can inadequate fuel delivery or incorrect air-mass measurement. Both banks lean at once make a shared problem plausible; they do not prove one. Fuel-trim and lean-code overview.
Diagnostic clues
| Observation | Interpretation | Next test |
|---|---|---|
| P0171 and P0174 together | Shared intake, airflow or fuel problem possible | Inspect intake after MAF, review trims, smoke-test if needed |
| Positive trims strongest at idle | Unmetered air may have larger proportional effect | Inspect boots and connections |
| Lean faults chiefly under load | Airflow and fuel supply deserve attention | Follow VIN-specific DME test plan |
| Whistling or unusual crankcase suction | CCV may be involved | Inspect ventilation and measure crankcase pressure properly |
| DISA rattle or visible seal problem | DISA hardware or sealing may be faulty | Inspect valve and pivot pin before restarting |
These are diagnostic possibilities, not factory pass/fail thresholds. BMW lean-mixture bulletin; BMW crankcase-ventilation bulletin.
1. Save codes and inspect the air filter
Record all DME faults, misfires and freeze-frame data. Compare fuel trims at stable idle and at a higher engine speed when safe. Do not assume an internet-wide percentage is the M54 specification. BMW SI B12 20 07 lists an incorrect air filter among the possible causes, so check the filter first. Inspect airbox closure, MAF seating, electrical connection and hose clamps. Source.
2. Inspect the upper boot and lower elbow
For a U.S.-market E46 330i, the RealOEM catalog shows upper rubber boot 13541438761, lower elbow 13541438759, and connecting ring 13541438760. The lower elbow has a branch for the idle-control valve. Cracks can hide underneath or inside a fold. With the engine off and cool, inspect the boots and their joints; remove the ducting if necessary to see the underside. Replace a damaged part, reinstall every connection fully, and check clamps and ring condition. RealOEM 330i diagram; FCP lower elbow.
Fitment warning: Turner specifies that upper boot 13541438761 fits an E46 325i/325Ci with M56 SULEV, not M54B25. Do not order the 330i boots for an M54 325i just because the bodies look alike. Turner fitment note.
3. Check CCV and DISA
A faulty M54 crankcase-ventilation regulator can cause rough running, noise and abnormal mixture adaptations. The oil-cap suction test is not a calibrated pressure measurement. Inspect the system and use BMW's proper diagnostic method when indicated. See the Department 69 M54 CCV guide and BMW SI B11 03 08.
Inspect the DISA seal and housing if there is evidence of an intake leak. A loose flap or missing pivot pin is a separate mechanical hazard. If the pin is missing, do not start the engine until it has been located. See the Department 69 DISA guide.
4. Smoke-test before guessing
When no obvious tear is visible, a suitable automotive smoke test can reveal intake and ventilation leaks. Use proper equipment with the engine off; avoid excessive pressure, especially into the crankcase. Do not spray flammable solvents around a running engine. Trace smoke to the actual leak before buying parts. A successful smoke test does not prove the MAF or fuel system is good. Diagnostic overview.
5. If the intake seals, test airflow and fuel supply
BMW's M54/M56 bulletin also names a defective air-mass meter. Generic OBD-II guidance includes fuel-delivery and sensor issues. Use the vehicle-specific test plan to assess relevant sensor signals and fuel delivery safely. An engine that runs differently when the MAF is unplugged does not by itself prove the MAF failed. Fuel-system tests require correct depressurization and equipment. Stop driving for a flashing check-engine light, severe misfire or other unsafe condition. BMW bulletin; P0174 reference.
6. Verify the repair
Reinspect disturbed joints. Compare fuel trims under similar conditions, perform a safe road test, and confirm the original faults do not return. Clearing the light immediately is not proof of repair. If adaptations were reset by a factory procedure, allow the necessary relearning before judging the result.

Frequently asked questions
Do both lean codes mean both oxygen sensors are bad?
No. They report a lean condition on both banks. Check shared air and fuel causes first.
Are 2882/2883 the same as P0171/P0174?
They are BMW-specific bank 1 and bank 2 mixture-control faults corresponding to the same broad lean-mixture issue. Record exact scanner output and DME version.
Where should I inspect first?
Start with the filter and intake after the MAF, especially the lower boot's idle-control-valve branch. Then inspect CCV, DISA and other connections.
Can I use 330i intake boots on an M54 325i?
Do not assume so. M54B25 and M56 SULEV fitment distinctions matter. Use the VIN-specific catalog.
What is the intake boot clamp torque?
No universal value is published here because an exact BMW specification was not verified for the relevant clamp hardware. Use the applicable VIN-specific repair instructions.
