BMW M52 Torque Specs: E36, E39 & Z3 Reference
The BMW M52 is found in the E36, early E39 and Z3, but the engine's tightening specifications should not be reduced to a single universal chart. BMW distinguishes cast-iron-block and aluminum-block M52 cylinder-head procedures, and the later double-VANOS M52TU is a separate application.
Scope: This reference covers the single-VANOS BMW M52 in E36, early E39 and Z3 engine service. It excludes the M52TU, M54 and S52. Match the engine, block material, installed hardware and complete BMW procedure before using any value.

M52 cylinder-head bolts: iron versus aluminum block
For the cast-iron-block M52, BMW specifies 30 Nm / 22.1 ft-lb + 90° + 90° for the M10 cylinder-head bolts. For an aluminum-block M52, the procedure is 40 Nm / 29.5 ft-lb + 90° + 90°. Both require replacement bolts that are washed and oiled. BMW cylinder-head torque table.
The full head procedure additionally distinguishes M10x95 bolts for cast-iron blocks and M10x110 bolts for aluminum blocks, and warns against oil remaining in the tapped holes. Follow the BMW tightening order, not just the values in a chart. BMW cylinder-head repair procedure.
M52 valve-cover torque and resealing
BMW lists 10 Nm / 88.5 in-lb for M6 cover fasteners and 15 Nm / 11.1 ft-lb for M7. Identify the hardware before selecting a value. BMW cylinder-head-cover torque table.
For resealing, BMW instructs installers to clean the mating surfaces, correctly seat the gasket and tighten the cap nuts crosswise from the inside outward. BMW valve-cover repair procedure. A related parts option is the Genuine BMW single-VANOS M52 valve-cover gasket set. Confirm the product's fitment selector and your exact vehicle before ordering.
M52 intake-manifold torque
The M52 tightening table separates intake-manifold-to-head hardware by diameter: M8 at 22 Nm / 16.2 ft-lb, M7 at 15 Nm / 11.1 ft-lb and M6 at 10 Nm / 88.5 in-lb. Do not assume all manifold fasteners are the same size. BMW intake-manifold tightening table.
M52 single-VANOS tightening specifications
BMW explicitly lists M52 for the solenoid valve to VANOS housing at 30 Nm / 22.1 ft-lb; the M14x1.5 banjo bolt at 32 Nm / 23.6 ft-lb; the M22x1.5 screw plug at 50 Nm / 36.9 ft-lb; and the hydraulic line at the oil-filter carrier at 32 Nm / 23.6 ft-lb. BMW variable-camshaft-control tightening table.
The same BMW table includes a left-hand-thread M6 hydraulic-piston fastener, but its application row names M52TU/M54/M56, not the single-VANOS M52. That specification is intentionally excluded here. When removing the VANOS unit, consider the Genuine BMW M52 VANOS sealing gasket, but confirm product fitment for your exact M52 before purchasing.
M52 oil-pan and drain-plug hardware
BMW's M52 oil-pan table separates drain plugs by size. For an identified M12x1.5 drain plug, it lists 25 Nm / 18.4 ft-lb. For pan-to-block M6 hardware, it lists 10 Nm / 88.5 in-lb for grade 8.8 and 12 Nm / 106.2 in-lb for grade 10.9. Identify the actual fastener size and grade before tightening. BMW's oil-service instructions include the M52 and require replacing sealing components during service. BMW M52-inclusive engine-oil service procedure.
Why other specifications are omitted
This is not a universal BMW six-cylinder chart. It does not apply M52TU double-VANOS hardware to the single-VANOS M52, or assume flywheel, spark-plug or other torque figures without a sufficiently clear application-specific reader-facing source. A plausible value is not enough.
