BMW S62 Torque Specs: E39 M5 & Z8 DIY Engine Reference

BMW

The BMW S62 V8 powers the E39 M5 and E52 Z8. As these cars age, valve-cover resealing, intake work, VANOS repairs and flywheel service increasingly fall into enthusiast and specialist-shop territory. The challenge is not finding torque numbers online. It is knowing whether a number actually belongs to the S62, which fastener it describes, and whether BMW attached a sequence, replacement requirement or production-date caveat to it.

This reference separates direct S62 documentation from broader BMW tightening tables that explicitly include the S62. When BMW's application is direct and unambiguous, the specification is stated normally. When a useful value comes from a broader BMW table, or its application requires interpretation, that limitation is called out beside the value and the source is linked inline so you can review the underlying documentation yourself.

Important: Department69 cross-referenced these specifications against BMW TIS-derived tightening tables and S62 repair procedures. This is an independent reference, not a substitute for the complete BMW repair procedure. Confirm the exact fastener, component, production date and repair operation before tightening anything. Preserve BMW's replacement-hardware, tightening-sequence, thread-condition and torque-angle requirements. Work on your car at your own risk.

S62 valve-cover torque specs

BMW's tightening table inside the E39 M5 S62 service hierarchy lists cylinder-head-cover torque by thread size: 10 Nm / 88.5 in-lb for M6 hardware and 15 Nm / 11.1 ft-lb for M7 hardware. The table appears inside the E39 M5 S62 tightening section but labels these rows "All." We therefore treat the torque values themselves as supported while avoiding the stronger claim that every S62 cover uses both fastener sizes. Match the actual fastener diameter. You can review BMW's TIS-derived table here. The S62-specific cover procedure says to install all retaining elements without initial stress and tighten them diagonally from the inside outward.

If you are resealing the covers, this S62 valve-cover gasket set for the E39 M5 and E52 Z8 includes both large cover gaskets, six seals and 20 sealing grommets.

S62 cylinder-head bolt torque

For M10 cylinder-head bolts, BMW explicitly lists the S62 at 30 Nm / 22.1 ft-lb + 80° + 80°. BMW specifies new bolts and says not to wash off their coating. The S62 repair procedure independently reinforces those requirements and calls for the prescribed tightening sequence and an angle tool.

S62 manual-flywheel torque

BMW's E39 M5 S62 flywheel table explicitly lists the S62 manual flywheel-to-crankshaft specification at 105 Nm / 77.4 ft-lb. The same entry says the bolts are a component part of the flywheel, the screw threads are oiled and screw-retaining compound must not be used.

For an OE-style replacement, Turner lists the OEM LuK dual-mass flywheel for the E39 M5 S62 as the replacement for BMW part 21212229190.

S62 intake-air-manifold torque

BMW's S62 intake procedure states that the illustrated E39 procedure also applies to the E52 Z8. Installation uses a preliminary approximately 5 Nm / 44.3 in-lb pass followed by a final 10 Nm / 88.5 in-lb pass. The detailed continuation specifies tightening the relevant screws from the inside outward. BMW also calls for replacement of the indicated nuts and sealing components where specified.

If the manifold is coming off, Turner lists this Genuine BMW intake-manifold gasket (BMW 11611406637) for the S62 in both the E39 M5 and E52 Z8.

S62 VANOS torque specs and the 10/1999 production split

BMW distinguishes two S62 VANOS solenoid arrangements: a non-pretensioned version through 10/1999 and a pretensioned version from 11/1999. BMW warns that the two versions of the solenoid valves and VANOS adjustment unit must not be mixed.

VANOS component Torque Application / note
Pressure line to VANOS adjustment unit, M10x1 13 Nm / 9.6 ft-lb S62/S54 explicitly listed.
Solenoid-valve cover to VANOS unit, M7 grade 10.9 19 Nm / 14.0 ft-lb S62 explicitly listed.
Pretensioned-solenoid threaded pins 16 Nm / 11.8 ft-lb From 11/1999 only. BMW says the plastic-coated pins do not need replacement.
VANOS gear bolts during timing procedure 10 Nm / 88.5 in-lb S62 procedure. Keep this value within BMW's complete timing sequence.
Source note: The 13 Nm / 9.6 ft-lb pressure-line and 19 Nm / 14.0 ft-lb solenoid-cover values come from a broader BMW variable-camshaft-control tightening table. The page is surfaced under an M62 service hierarchy, but the relevant rows explicitly name S62. We consider that strong application evidence, but because it is not an S62-only page, review the BMW TIS-derived table here before using either value.

S62 oil drain-line torque

BMW's broader oil-filter-and-pipes tightening table explicitly includes the S62 for the M14x1.5 banjo bolt connecting the oil drain line to the oil filter and upper oil-sump section. The specification is 30 Nm / 22.1 ft-lb. The source page is surfaced under an M54 service hierarchy rather than an S62-only page, so while the S62 application is explicitly written into the relevant row, we recommend checking the BMW TIS-derived table directly before using this value.

How to read the confidence levels on this page

Directly confirmed means the value appears on an S62-specific BMW TIS-derived page or repair procedure and the hardware/application is clear. Broader BMW table means the relevant BMW table explicitly names S62, but the reader-facing page is filed under another engine or includes several engine families. In those cases we say so, link the exact source inline, and avoid presenting our interpretation as more certain than the documentation allows.

If a specification cannot be tied cleanly to the S62, the relevant hardware and a usable source, it is omitted rather than filled in from an unsourced internet torque list.

Frequently asked questions

What is the BMW S62 valve-cover torque?

10 Nm / 88.5 in-lb for M6 cylinder-head-cover hardware and 15 Nm / 11.1 ft-lb for M7 hardware. Match the fastener diameter and follow the inside-out diagonal tightening procedure.

What is the S62 cylinder-head bolt torque?

30 Nm / 22.1 ft-lb + 80° + 80°. BMW specifies new bolts, intact factory coating and the prescribed tightening sequence.

What is the S62 flywheel torque?

105 Nm / 77.4 ft-lb for the manual flywheel to crankshaft. BMW specifies oiled threads and no screw-retaining compound.

What is the S62 intake-manifold torque?

BMW's S62 procedure uses a preliminary approximately 5 Nm / 44.3 in-lb pass followed by a final 10 Nm / 88.5 in-lb pass. BMW explicitly states the E39 procedure also applies to the E52 Z8.

What is the S62 VANOS pressure-line torque?

The M10x1 pressure line to the VANOS adjustment unit is 13 Nm / 9.6 ft-lb.

What changes on S62 VANOS units after October 1999?

BMW distinguishes non-pretensioned solenoid valves through 10/1999 from pretensioned solenoid valves from 11/1999. On the later version, the plastic-coated threaded pins are 16 Nm / 11.8 ft-lb and BMW says they do not need replacement. Do not mix the two VANOS/solenoid versions.

What is the S62 VANOS gear-bolt torque during timing?

BMW's S62 timing procedure specifies 10 Nm / 88.5 in-lb at the stated stages. Do not separate this value from BMW's complete timing sequence and required special tools.
