BMW M50 Torque Specs: E36 & E34 DIY Engine Reference

BMW M50 Torque Specs

The BMW M50 powers popular early E36 and late E34 models, but a one-size-fits-all torque chart can be misleading. BMW's tightening tables distinguish fastener sizes, and VANOS-equipped M50 engines have hardware absent from earlier non-VANOS versions.

Scope: BMW M50 and single-VANOS M50TU engine service in E36 320i/325i-family and E34 520i/525i-family applications. This is an engine reference, not a chassis torque chart. Match the exact engine, model-market application and installed hardware. VANOS specifications are only for M50/VANOS.

Technical disclaimer: Department69 cross-referenced these specifications against BMW TIS-derived tightening tables and service information. This independent reference is not a substitute for the complete BMW repair procedure. Confirm engine variant, fastener size and grade, component, thread condition, replacement-hardware requirement and repair sequence before tightening anything. If the hardware in front of you does not match the cited application, stop and verify the exact procedure. Work on your car at your own risk.

M50 cylinder-head bolts

BMW explicitly includes M50 in its M10 cast-iron-block head-bolt row. The procedure is 30 Nm / 22.1 ft-lb + 90° + 90°. BMW specifies replacement bolts, washed and oiled. Both angle stages matter. See the BMW cylinder-head tightening table.

M50 valve-cover torque

The E36 M50 table lists 10 Nm / 88.5 in-lb for M6 and 15 Nm / 11.1 ft-lb for M7 cover hardware. These are general rows, so verify the fastener size rather than assuming every cover fastener is identical. BMW cover tightening table.

For single-VANOS M50 applications, Turner lists a valve-cover gasket set for 1993-1995 E36 325i/325is/325ic and E34 525i. Do not assume this fits an earlier non-VANOS M50.

M50 intake-manifold torque

BMW's E36 M50 intake table lists manifold-to-head hardware at 22 Nm / 16.2 ft-lb for M8, 15 Nm / 11.1 ft-lb for M7 and 10 Nm / 88.5 in-lb for M6. Use the value for the actual fastener. BMW intake tightening table.

For manifold removal, Turner lists an Elring intake-manifold gasket, BMW part 11611717259 for M50-powered E36 325i and E34 525i applications. Check your VIN before ordering.

M50 spark-plug torque

BMW's spark-plug special-tool documentation explicitly includes M50 among engines using torque limiter 12 1 200, rated 30 Nm / 22.1 ft-lb. Verify the plug and installation procedure before tightening. BMW M50-inclusive torque-limiter documentation.

M50 VANOS torque specs

Only for M50/VANOS, BMW's broader VANOS tightening table lists solenoid-to-housing 30 Nm / 22.1 ft-lb, M14x1.5 banjo bolt to the adjustment unit 32 Nm / 23.6 ft-lb, and hydraulic line at the oil-filter carrier 32 Nm / 23.6 ft-lb. BMW variable-camshaft-control table.

Source context: The VANOS page appears within an S50 manual hierarchy, but the relevant rows explicitly name M50/VANOS. Do not apply these values to non-VANOS engines.

M50 oil-pan and drain-plug torque

BMW's E36 M50 oil-pan table lists multiple drain-plug sizes. For M12x1.5, the value is 25 Nm / 18.4 ft-lb. Oil-pan-to-block M6 grade 8.8 hardware is 10 Nm / 88.5 in-lb. Verify thread size and fastener grade. BMW M50 oil-pan table.

For a reseal, Turner lists a Genuine BMW oil-pan gasket, part 11131437237 for M50 applications including E36 325i and E34 525i. Confirm fitment before purchase.

Why some values are omitted

Flywheel torque is intentionally omitted because the available reader-facing manual-flywheel rows do not cleanly identify the M50 application. A page located inside an M50 manual is not, by itself, enough to assign a value from another engine family.
