BMW N20/N26 Common Torque Specifications: Engine Maintenance & DIY Reference
BMW's N20 and N26 four-cylinders are now firmly in DIY territory. Oil leaks, ignition service and valve-cover work are routine enough, while the timing-chain system has become the repair that defines long-term ownership for many of these engines. The useful torque values are spread across several different procedures, and some of them are low enough that guessing by feel is a particularly bad idea.
This reference brings the most useful N20/N26 engine torque specifications into one place. It is deliberately an engine-level guide. Chassis hardware such as wheel bolts, brakes, suspension, axles and drivetrain mounts belongs in the torque reference for the exact BMW the engine is installed in.

Which BMWs use the N20 and N26?
In the U.S., these turbocharged four-cylinders appeared across cars including the 228i, 320i, 328i, 428i, 528i, X1, X3, X4 and Z4 sDrive28i, depending on model year and emissions application. The N26 is the SULEV derivative and shares much of the service architecture with the N20, but that does not mean every component or procedure should automatically be treated as interchangeable.
The application lists in FCP Euro's N20/N26 ignition guide and N20/N26 oil-filter-housing guide are useful starting points, but always confirm the actual engine and production date before ordering parts.
N20/N26 oil-service torque specs
Oil service is where application matters immediately. Many rear-wheel-drive F2x/F3x N20/N26 cars use a plastic oil pan and plastic drain plug. FCP Euro's F30 N20/N26 oil-change procedure specifies only 8 Nm / 70.8 in-lb for that plug and 25 Nm / 18.4 ft-lb for the filter cap.
| Oil-service fastener | Torque | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Plastic oil-pan drain plug | 8 Nm / 70.8 in-lb | For the plastic-pan RWD F2x/F3x application documented in the cited procedure. Replace the plug as specified by the service kit/procedure. |
| Oil filter cap | 25 Nm / 18.4 ft-lb | Lubricate the new O-ring and install it in the correct groove. |
Do not transfer the 8 Nm / 70.8 in-lb plastic-plug value to an xDrive car or another N20/N26 installation just because the engine code matches. Oil-pan construction is chassis-dependent.
N20/N26 spark-plug torque
FCP Euro's N20/N26 spark-plug and ignition-coil procedure specifies 23 Nm / 17.0 ft-lb for the spark plugs.
| Component | Torque | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Spark plugs | 23 Nm / 17.0 ft-lb | N20/N26 value in the cited ignition procedure. |
| F30 strut-brace bolts encountered during ignition service | 56 Nm / 41.3 ft-lb + 90° | Chassis hardware from the cited F30 procedure, not a universal N20/N26 engine specification. |
N20/N26 valve-cover torque specs
The plastic valve cover and its seals are another common aging-engine job. FCP Euro's N20/N26 valve-cover procedure specifies 9 Nm / 79.7 in-lb for the cover bolts and provides the tightening pattern used during installation.
| Valve-cover job fastener | Torque | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Valve-cover bolts | 9 Nm / 79.7 in-lb | Tighten in the specified sequence and in stages. |
| High-pressure fuel-pump bolts | 12 Nm / 8.9 ft-lb | Use the complete fuel-system procedure. |
| Fuel-injector line fittings | 13 Nm / 9.6 ft-lb | Use the complete fuel-system procedure and required cleanliness precautions. |
| Camshaft-adjuster fasteners | 5.5 Nm / 48.7 in-lb | From the cited valve-cover procedure. |
If you're resealing the top end rather than replacing a single seal, ECS lists an N20 valve-cover gasket replacement kit with gasket, hardware and sealing washers for F30 N20 applications. Confirm the exact vehicle before ordering.
N20/N26 oil-filter-housing gasket torque specs
FCP Euro's N20/N26 oil-filter-housing gasket guide specifies 22 Nm / 16.2 ft-lb for the housing bolts and 18 Nm / 13.3 ft-lb for the oil-cooler bolts.
| Component | Torque | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Oil-filter housing bolts | 22 Nm / 16.2 ft-lb | N20/N26 procedure. |
| Oil-cooler bolts | 18 Nm / 13.3 ft-lb | Where equipped. |
| Oil filter cap | 25 Nm / 18.4 ft-lb | Lubricate and correctly position the O-ring. |
| DME bolts | 12 Nm / 8.9 ft-lb | From the cited F30 N20/N26 housing procedure. |
ECS catalogs both housing-to-engine and oil-cooler seals for N20 applications; its N20 oil-filter-housing gasket options are useful when matching the exact parts to the car. Use the vehicle selector because housing and gasket applications can vary.
N20 timing-chain torque specs
This is the section that makes an N20-specific reference especially useful. The timing-chain repair contains a mix of low-torque fasteners and major torque-plus-angle procedures. FCP Euro's detailed N20 timing-chain reassembly guide publishes the values below as part of the complete installation procedure.
| Timing-system component | Torque | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Oil-pump drive mounting bolts | 10 Nm / 7.4 ft-lb | N20 timing procedure. |
| Oil-pump sprocket bolt | 95 Nm / 70.1 ft-lb | N20 timing procedure. |
| Timing-chain guide bolts | 10 Nm / 7.4 ft-lb | N20 timing procedure. |
| Upper guide pin | 14 Nm / 10.3 ft-lb | N20 timing procedure. |
| Lower guide pin | 24 Nm / 17.7 ft-lb | N20 timing procedure. |
| Camshaft adjusters | 55 Nm / 40.6 ft-lb + 55° | Torque-plus-angle. Follow the complete locking/timing procedure. |
| Crankshaft bolt | 100 Nm / 73.8 ft-lb + 270° | Torque-plus-angle. Follow the complete procedure and hardware requirements. |
| Upper guide-pin plug | 25 Nm / 18.4 ft-lb | N20 timing procedure. |
| Lower guide-pin plugs | 50 Nm / 36.9 ft-lb | N20 timing procedure. |
| Vibration-damper bolts | 35 Nm / 25.8 ft-lb | N20 timing procedure. |
| Camshaft-position sensor bolts | 6 Nm / 53.1 in-lb | N20 timing procedure. |
| Oil pickup bolt | 10 Nm / 7.4 ft-lb | N20 timing procedure. |
| Timing-chain tensioner | 80 Nm / 59.0 ft-lb | N20 timing procedure. |
| Oil-pan bolts | 12 Nm / 8.9 ft-lb | As specified in the cited timing-chain reassembly procedure; verify exact pan/chassis application. |
| Vacuum-pump bolts | 10 Nm / 7.4 ft-lb | N20 timing procedure. |
| Fuel-injector connections | 23 Nm / 17.0 ft-lb | N20 timing procedure. |
| Fuel-rail clamp fasteners | 8 Nm / 70.8 in-lb | N20 timing procedure. |
| High-pressure fuel-pump bolts | 12 Nm / 8.9 ft-lb | N20 timing procedure. |
| High-pressure fuel-line connections | 30 Nm / 22.1 ft-lb | N20 timing procedure. |
A torque table is not a timing-chain procedure. Correct crank and cam locking, timing-tool setup, hardware replacement, angle tightening and reassembly order all matter. Use the full procedure rather than treating this section as a shortcut.
For owners actually undertaking the job, ECS currently lists an N20 basic timing-service kit containing updated timing components plus associated gaskets, hardware, oil and filter. Confirm the kit against the exact vehicle and production date before ordering.
Why this guide does not include every N20/N26 fastener
The N20/N26 family spans multiple chassis, drivetrains and oil-pan configurations. That makes some commonly encountered bolts vehicle-specific rather than engine-specific. For brakes, suspension, wheels, axle hardware and other chassis systems, use the torque reference for the exact BMW chassis. Leaving a number out is better than pretending a value verified on one installation automatically applies to all of them.
