BMW N55 Common Torque Specifications: Engine Maintenance & DIY Reference
The BMW N55 is old enough now that a lot of owners are doing the work these engines routinely need themselves: oil changes, spark plugs, valve covers, oil-filter-housing gaskets, intake removal and, increasingly, deeper Valvetronic repairs. The frustrating part is that the useful torque values are scattered across service information and job-specific repair guides.
This reference pulls together the N55 engine torque specifications that are most useful for common maintenance and DIY work. It is intentionally an engine reference, not a chassis torque chart. Wheel bolts, brakes, suspension, axle hardware, transmission mounts and other chassis-specific fasteners should be looked up for the exact BMW the N55 is installed in.

Those are the values most likely to be useful during normal N55 ownership. The sections below add the application details that matter before putting a torque wrench on the car.
What BMWs does this N55 guide apply to?
The N55 appeared across a unusually wide range of BMWs, including late E-chassis cars and much of the early F-chassis era. Familiar U.S.-market examples include the E82 135i, late E9x 335i, F10 535i, F22 M235i, F30 335i, F32 435i, F87 M2 and several X3, X4, X5 and X6 applications.
That breadth is exactly why this article does not mix in chassis hardware. An N55 valve-cover fastener can be an engine-level reference; an F22 strut bolt or F10 brake-caliper bolt is not. BMW also revised the N55 during its production life. The N55B30T0 used in the F87 M2, for example, incorporates meaningful differences including a different spark-plug application. FCP Euro's N55 engine guide is a useful overview of those revisions.
N55 oil-change torque specs
BMW's engine-oil quick-reference bulletin is particularly useful because it identifies oil capacities and drain/filter-cap torque by chassis and engine rather than treating every BMW oil pan as identical.
| Oil-service fastener | Torque | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Oil drain plug | 25 Nm / 18.4 ft-lb | Listed by BMW for the N55 applications in the bulletin, including F10 and F-series N55 applications. Confirm your exact chassis and oil pan before use. |
| Oil filter cap | 25 Nm / 18.4 ft-lb | BMW specifies a lightly oiled O-ring. Make sure the new O-ring is seated in the correct groove rather than against the cap flange. |
Twenty-five Newton-meters is only 18.4 ft-lb. The filter cap does not need to be cranked down. The cap seals at the O-ring, not because the housing has been tightened as hard as possible.
If you're assembling an N55 service order rather than buying individual filters, Turner's N55 maintenance-service package is one example of an N55-specific service bundle. It is listed for the E82 135i N55, so use the retailer's vehicle selector rather than assuming every item in that particular package fits every N55 chassis.
N55 spark-plug torque
The standard N55 spark-plug torque is 23 Nm / 17.0 ft-lb. FCP Euro's N55 spark-plug replacement guide specifies 23 Nm / 17.0 ft-lb and specifically notes that anti-seize is not needed on the plated replacement plugs used in the procedure.
| Component | Torque | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Spark plug | 23 Nm / 17.0 ft-lb | Standard N55 specification in the cited procedure. Start plugs by hand and use the correct thin-wall 14 mm 12-point spark-plug socket. |
The F87 M2 deserves an extra fitment check when ordering plugs. Its N55B30T0 uses a different spark-plug application from the standard N55, as documented in the engine overview linked above. That doesn't justify casually transferring a part number from a 335i or 535i to an M2.
N55 valve-cover torque specs
The N55's plastic valve cover incorporates the crankcase-ventilation system and is a common source of oil and vacuum leaks as it ages. FCP Euro's N55 valve-cover procedure specifies 8.5 Nm / 75.2 in-lb for all 24 valve-cover bolts and also documents the fuel-system and intake-manifold values encountered during the job.
| Valve-cover job fastener | Torque | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Valve-cover bolts | 8.5 Nm / 75.2 in-lb | 24 fasteners in the cited procedure. Follow the tightening sequence rather than simply working around the perimeter. |
| Intake manifold nuts/bolts | 15 Nm / 11.1 ft-lb | Applicable where manifold removal is part of the repair. |
| Small fuel lines | 23 Nm / 17.0 ft-lb | Use the complete fuel-system procedure and appropriate cleanliness precautions. |
| Large fuel line | 30 Nm / 22.1 ft-lb | Use the complete fuel-system procedure. |
| Fuel-rail mounting bolts | 13 Nm / 9.6 ft-lb | From the cited N55 valve-cover procedure. |
At 8.5 Nm / 75.2 in-lb, the valve-cover bolts are a good example of why a small-range torque wrench is useful. That's only about 75 in-lb. This is not a place to substitute feel for the published value on an aging plastic cover and aluminum cylinder head.
For later F-chassis applications, Turner's Genuine BMW N55 valve-cover kit includes the cover, gasket, CCV vent hose, Valvetronic flange gasket and associated hardware, and Turner lists it for F22/F23, F3x and F87 N55 applications. Confirm the exact vehicle before ordering because earlier E-chassis N55s use a different fitment path.
N55 oil-filter-housing gasket torque specs
The oil-filter-housing gasket is one of the N55 repairs worth addressing before a small leak becomes a much larger problem. Oil from the housing can reach the serpentine belt, and a displaced belt can be pulled past the front crank seal. FCP Euro documents that failure path in its N5x oil-filter-housing gasket procedure.
| Oil-filter-housing fastener | Torque | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Oil-filter housing to cylinder head | 22 Nm / 16.2 ft-lb | Tighten evenly. N55 access requires intake-manifold removal in the cited procedure. |
| Oil cooler to oil-filter housing | 16 Nm / 11.8 ft-lb | Where equipped with the oil cooler attached to the housing. |
| Oil filter cap | 25 Nm / 18.4 ft-lb | Lightly oil the new O-ring. |
| Intake manifold to cylinder head | 15 Nm / 11.1 ft-lb | N54/N55 specification in the cited procedure. |
There is one procedural detail here more important than another torque number: BMW issued service information emphasizing oil-system priming after repairs that interrupt the engine's oil supply circuit. FCP Euro's discussion of BMW SI B11 09 15 and N55 oil-system priming specifically includes oil-filter-housing work among the repairs where priming matters. Read the complete procedure before starting the engine after this kind of repair.
If you're doing the gasket and oil service together, ECS's Genuine BMW oil-filter-housing gasket replacement kit is cataloged for N55 applications and bundles the housing-related service parts. Use the vehicle selector to confirm fitment for your chassis.
N55 Valvetronic torque specs
Valvetronic work is deeper than routine maintenance, but these engines are now old enough that eccentric-shaft and servomotor repairs are increasingly relevant. FCP Euro's N55/S55 eccentric-shaft replacement guide publishes several of the small-fastener torque values used during the job.
| Valvetronic component | Fastener | Torque |
|---|---|---|
| Eccentric-shaft cap to cylinder head | M6x27 | 8.5 Nm / 75.2 in-lb |
| Intermediate-lever support to cylinder head | M6x23 | 10 Nm / 88.5 in-lb |
| Oil spray nozzle to intermediate-lever support | M6x30 | 10 Nm / 88.5 in-lb |
| Return spring to cylinder head | M6x20 | 10 Nm / 88.5 in-lb |
| Valvetronic servomotor to cylinder head | M6x16 | 10 Nm / 88.5 in-lb |
These values are only part of the job. Valvetronic repair requires the correct mechanical procedure and a stop-limit test after assembly. A torque table is not a substitute for that process.
Why this guide does not include every N55 fastener
The N55 lived in too many different cars to make a single honest table for every bolt surrounding it. Strut braces are a simple example: removing a valve cover in one chassis may expose braces and body hardware that aren't present, or aren't identical, in another. The same problem gets larger with engine mounts, transmissions, differentials, driveshafts, brakes and suspension.
So this page deliberately stops at specifications that can be tied to the N55 engine or to a clearly identified N55 service procedure. For chassis hardware, use the Department69 torque reference for the specific chassis where available, or BMW repair information filtered to the exact VIN/build configuration.
Torque-angle bolts and replacement hardware
BMW uses aluminum fasteners, torque-to-yield hardware and torque-plus-angle procedures throughout this generation of cars. Never convert a torque-plus-angle procedure into a single guessed torque value. Likewise, don't assume a bolt can be reused simply because its threads look good.
If a repair instruction calls for replacement hardware, replace it. If it identifies a fastener by size or material, verify that the hardware in front of you matches before using the corresponding specification.
