BMW E90/E91/E92/E93 Common Torque Specifications: Maintenance & DIY Reference

BMW
BMW E90 E91 E92 E93 torque specifications and DIY maintenance reference

Finding a torque spec for an E90 is easy. Finding the right torque spec for the exact engine, drivetrain and fastener you are working on can be considerably harder.

The E9x 3 Series spans the E90 sedan, E91 wagon, E92 coupe and E93 convertible, with N51, N52, N54 and N55 engines, rear- and all-wheel drive, several transmissions and plenty of hardware changes along the way. A number copied from a 328i forum post is not necessarily the number you want for a 335xi, and the M3 deserves its own reference almost entirely.

This guide consolidates common maintenance and DIY torque specifications with both Newton-meters and pound-feet where appropriate. More importantly, it preserves the information that often disappears from quick-reference lists: engine applicability, torque-angle procedures, replacement-hardware requirements and whether a suspension fastener needs to be tightened at normal ride height.

The goal is not to create the longest list of E90 torque specs on the internet. It is to create one you can actually trust while working on the car.

Models This Guide Covers

This guide primarily covers North American non-M E9x 3 Series models: E90 sedan, E91 wagon, E92 coupe and E93 convertible, including 325i/325xi, 328i/328xi/328i xDrive, 330i/330xi, 335i/335xi/335i xDrive and 335is.

That includes the common N51, N52, N54 and N55 gasoline engines. The E90/E92/E93 M3 and S65 V8 are not automatically covered by the non-M specifications below. Where a specification has not been verified for a particular engine or drivetrain, this guide says so rather than carrying a number over by assumption.

Quick Reference: Common E9x Torque Specs

The quick-reference table is intentionally conservative. The sections below explain application limits, replacement hardware and source provenance.

Before Using Any Torque Specification on an E9x

A torque value is not useful if it belongs to a different bolt. BMW used conventional fasteners, aluminum fasteners, torque-to-yield hardware and torque-plus-angle procedures throughout the E9x. Some suspension fasteners also need their final tightening performed with the suspension at its normal loaded position.

Do not turn 100 Nm + 90° into 100 Nm. The additional 90-degree rotation is part of the tightening procedure. The same applies to replacement hardware: if the BMW procedure says to replace the screw or nut, that instruction belongs alongside the torque value.

Wheels

Wheel bolt, M12x1.5 120 Nm / 88.5 lb-ft E90/E91/E92/E93 No replacement instruction in cited table; recheck torque after installation BMW TIS

BMW specifies 120 Nm (88.5 lb-ft) for the M12 x 1.5 wheel bolts used across the E90/E91/E92/E93. BMW's TIS also instructs technicians to check the torque of all wheel bolts again after installation.

Clean the mating surfaces and do not casually lubricate wheel-bolt threads. Changing thread friction changes the relationship between applied torque and clamping force.

Oil drain plug

BMW TIS specifies 25 Nm (18.4 lb-ft) for the M12 x 1.5 oil drain plug on the N51, N52 and N54 applications verified for this guide. The N51 and N52K documentation also explicitly calls for a replacement sealing ring.

Oil-filter cap and housing

For common E9x six-cylinder service, the oil-filter cap is commonly specified at 25 Nm (18.4 lb-ft). Oil-filter-housing work deserves more care because kit contents and hardware vary by engine and production date. Confirm the procedure against your engine before ordering or torquing parts.

Oil-Filter Housing: N52

The N52 oil-filter-housing gasket is a common service item, and it is worth buying the complete hardware package rather than treating the gasket as the only part involved.

Parts: Turner Motorsport N52 Oil Filter Housing Gasket Kit - includes gasket 11428637821, three housing bolts and an oil-pressure sensor.

Use the retailer vehicle selector or VIN before ordering. A useful affiliate link is only useful if the fitment is right.

Spark Plugs

BMW's TIS tightening table specifies spark plugs by thread size: M12 x 1.25 plugs at 23 ± 3 Nm and M14 x 1.25 plugs at 30 ± 3 Nm, installed ungreased. The N54-specific TIS entry independently specifies 23 Nm for its M12 x 1.25 plugs.

Source: BMW TIS spark-plug specification

Source: BMW TIS N54 spark-plug specification

The takeaway is not that every E9x spark plug is automatically 23 Nm. Verify the engine and plug application first. Unless BMW or the plug manufacturer specifies otherwise for the exact application, do not add anti-seize: changing thread friction changes the relationship between torque and clamping load.

N51/N52 Valve Cover

N51/N52 valve-cover hardware varies with production date and valve-cover design. Turner notes that BMW moved to a plastic valve cover for the 2007 model year on N51/N52 applications, and its application guidance distinguishes earlier gasket/bolt service from later complete-cover service. Confirm production date and VIN before ordering.

N54 Valve Cover

BMW TIS specifies 8.5 Nm (75 in-lb) for the N54 M6 cylinder-head-cover fasteners.

Cooling System: N52

Cooling-system kits are one of the most natural affiliate placements in this article because the job is parts-heavy and fitment matters. ECS currently offers an N52 cooling refresh kit that includes a water pump with new bolts, thermostat and housing, expansion tank, cap, coolant and water-pump/thermostat hoses, with E90/E91/E92/E93 N52 fitment listed for multiple models.

Parts: ECS Tuning N52 Cooling System Refresh Kit

This guide does not carry a single water-pump fastener value across N51/N52/N54/N55 without a matching factory application. Verify the exact engine procedure and replacement-hardware requirement before final torque.

Do not automatically carry these values over to an E9x M3, aftermarket brake kit, modified suspension or a different fastener class.

Rear Suspension

Camber arm → wheel carrier 165 Nm / 121.7 lb-ft E90/E91/E92/E93 Replace nut; tighten in normal position BMW TIS

BMW TIS is especially useful here because it preserves the instructions that disappear from most quick-reference lists. For E81/E82/E87/E88/E90/E91/E92/E93 applications, multiple rear-arm connections are specified at 100 Nm with replacement nuts and final tightening in the normal suspension position; the traction-strut-to-wheel-carrier and control-arm-to-wheel-carrier screws use 100 Nm + 90°; camber-arm connections use 165 Nm.

Source: BMW TIS rear control arms and struts

That context matters. 'Rear arms = 100 Nm' is not a complete repair instruction.

Differential Mounting

BMW TIS specifies the rear differential mounting to the rear axle carrier at 100 Nm for the M12 front connection and 165 Nm for the M14 rear connection, with the rear nut replaced. The non-S65 vibration-damper connections shown in the same TIS table are 68 Nm.

These are differential mounting specifications, not universal drain/fill-plug specifications. We are intentionally not publishing one generic E9x differential service-plug torque until the exact final-drive applications are separately verified.

Oil Pan Hardware: Why Engine Identification Matters

Oil pan → block, M8x26 aluminum screw 8 Nm + 90° N52 aluminum sump Replace screw; blue-marked aluminum hardware BMW TIS
Oil pan → block, M8x92/M8x112 aluminum screw 8 Nm + 180° N52 aluminum sump Replace screw; blue-marked aluminum hardware BMW TIS

Oil pan → block, M8x26 aluminum screw 8 Nm + 90° N54 aluminum sump Replace screw BMW TIS
Oil pan → block, M8x92/M8x112 aluminum screw 8 Nm + 180° N54 aluminum sump Replace screw BMW TIS

The oil pan is a good example of why an E9x torque page needs an Engine / Application column. N52 aluminum oil-pan M8x26 screws are 8 Nm + 90°, while longer M8x92/M8x112 screws are 8 Nm + 180°, and BMW specifies replacement aluminum screws. N51 documentation differs for some hardware, including an 8 Nm + 60° procedure for certain M8x26 aluminum-sump screws.

A list that simply says 'E90 oil pan bolts: 8 Nm' is incomplete and can be wrong for the exact hardware in front of you.

xDrive, N55 and Transmission Coverage

These areas remain intentionally conservative. xDrive adds a front differential, front axles, a transfer case and packaging differences. E9x cars also used multiple manual and automatic transmissions, and the 335is adds DCT. N55-powered late E9x cars deserve their own engine-specific verification pass.

Rather than fill the page with plausible-looking values, this version only publishes specifications that were matched to a clear application. Additional N55, xDrive and transmission rows should be added only after the exact BMW procedure is verified.

Common Torque-Spec Mistakes

Assuming every E9x uses the same hardware. Engine, drivetrain, production date, M/non-M configuration and replacement hardware can all matter.

Ignoring the angle after the torque value. 100 Nm + 90° does not mean 100 Nm. The additional rotation is part of the tightening procedure.

Reusing one-time-use hardware. If BMW says replace the bolt or nut, replace it.

Tightening rubber-bushed suspension arms at full droop. BMW explicitly specifies normal-position tightening for multiple E9x rear suspension connections.

Lubricating threads without checking the procedure. BMW's spark-plug table explicitly specifies ungreased plugs.

Using the wrong torque wrench. Low-value engine fasteners deserve a low-range torque wrench; suspension and wheel hardware generally require a larger-range tool.

Why E9x Torque Specs Conflict Online

Sometimes a source is wrong. Sometimes two sources describe different fasteners. Sometimes BMW changed the hardware. Sometimes a 328i value gets copied into a 335i or M3 thread until the original context disappears.

This guide does not resolve those conflicts by guessing. BMW TIS receives priority when the application is clear; detailed technical procedures are used as supporting references. Where application-level confidence is not high enough, the number is left out.

Department69 Take

The useful torque reference is not the longest list of numbers somebody could scrape from the internet. It is the one that tells you what gets torqued, how much, on which car, under what conditions, whether the hardware needs to be replaced, and where the number came from.

If you have BMW factory documentation that conflicts with a value here, send the source and application. We would rather correct the database than defend a number simply because it has already been published.
