BMW B58 Gen 1 Torque Specs: Complete DIY Engine Reference

BMW

The first-generation BMW B58 has earned a reputation as one of BMW's strongest modern turbocharged engines, but the cars around it are now old enough that routine service and a few age-related repairs are increasingly DIY jobs. Oil changes and spark plugs are simple. The plastic oil-filter housing is a much larger project, and it is exactly the kind of repair where having the correct low-torque values matters.

This reference is intentionally scoped to first-generation B58 BMW applications, centered on cars such as the F22/F23 M240i, F30 340i, F32/F33/F36 440i, early G30 540i and G11 740i. Later B58TU/Gen 2 applications, including later M340i/M440i variants, use revised hardware and should not be assumed identical. The A90 Supra also uses a B58, but Toyota-specific service procedures should be checked rather than automatically importing every BMW chassis procedure.

Important: Department69 cross-referenced these specifications against current technical references and application-specific service information. This is an independent reference, not factory repair documentation. B58 hardware and procedures vary by generation, chassis, drivetrain and production date. Verify the exact application, fastener type, replacement-hardware requirement and complete repair procedure for your VIN before starting work. Work on your car at your own risk.

Why this page is Gen 1 B58 only

"B58" is no longer narrow enough to be a safe service scope. BMW revised the engine family substantially over time, and spark-plug applications alone demonstrate the problem. Gen 2 B58/S58 plugs are sold under different OE numbers and are separately identified by suppliers. This page therefore stays with the earlier B58 generation rather than creating one oversized table that implies every B58 fastener stayed unchanged.

FCP Euro's B58 engine reference documents the original engine architecture and lists early B58 applications and maintenance information. For later B58TU cars, use generation-specific service information.

Gen 1 B58 oil-change torque specs

For the early B58 applications covered here, the commonly published oil-service values are 25 Nm / 18.4 ft-lb for the drain plug and 25 Nm / 18.4 ft-lb for the oil-filter cap. A current B58 housing technical reference lists both values, and application-specific B58 oil-change references independently use the same figures.

Oil-service fastenerTorqueNotes
Oil drain plug25 Nm / 18.4 ft-lbHand-start the plug and replace the sealing washer as required.
Oil-filter cap25 Nm / 18.4 ft-lbThe cap seals at its O-ring. More torque is not better.

The plastic housing is one reason not to improvise on the filter cap. Race German's B58 housing technical page specifically identifies cracked housings from overtightening the filter cap as a failure mode and publishes the 25 Nm / 18.4 ft-lb cap value.

If you're doing a complete service, Turner's Genuine BMW B58 0W-30 oil-change kit includes seven quarts of BMW oil, the B58 filter and the drain-plug sealing components, and Turner catalogs it for B58 3.0L applications with vehicle-selector confirmation.

Gen 1 B58 spark-plug torque

The Gen 1 B58 plug application uses a 23 Nm / 17.0 ft-lb tightening value. Bosch's 0242145555 plug, cross-referenced to BMW 12120040551/12120047375, is published with a 23 Nm / 17.0 ft-lb tightening torque. FCP Euro's F30 reference identifies 12120040551 as the B58 plug used on 2016-2018 340i applications.

ComponentTorqueNotes
Gen 1 B58 spark plug23 Nm / 17.0 ft-lbConfirm the exact plug number before installation. Later B58 generations use different plug applications.

For a complete ignition refresh, Turner's Gen 1 B58 ignition-service kit is explicitly labeled for Gen 1 B58 3.0L and lists fitment including the F22 M240i, F30 340i and F32/F33/F36 440i. It bundles six coils and six NGK 94201 plugs.

Gen 1 B58 valve-cover torque

The Gen 1 B58 valve-cover fasteners use 10 Nm / 88.5 in-lb. This is a low-torque application, so a small-range torque wrench is preferable to tightening by feel. Tighten in the correct sequence and verify that the gasket remains seated before final torque.

ComponentTorqueNotes
Valve-cover bolts10 Nm / 88.5 in-lbTighten in sequence. Confirm exact application before using this value on a later B58TU/Gen 2 engine.

The 10 Nm / 88.5 in-lb value is independently listed in current B58 service-reference data for the early engine family. Because later B58 applications evolved, this page does not extend that claim beyond the Gen 1 scope.

B58 oil-filter-housing replacement torque specs

The plastic oil-filter housing is one of the most consequential age-related B58 repairs. FCP Euro describes the B48/B58 housing as a plastic carrier beneath the intake manifold that can develop oil leaks, coolant leaks, cracking or internal deterioration. Its Genuine BMW B58 housing kit is specifically cataloged for 340i, 340i xDrive, 440i, 440i xDrive and additional B58 applications.

For the housing assembly used on the applications listed by the technical source, the fasteners are deliberately low torque:

Housing-area fastenerTorqueNotes
Oil-filter housing to engine block4 Nm / 35.4 in-lb initial, then 10 Nm / 88.5 in-lb finalTwo-stage tightening procedure.
Oil-to-water cooler10 Nm / 88.5 in-lbHousing assembly.
Transmission oil cooler to crankcase8 Nm / 70.8 in-lbAutomatic applications where the circuit is opened.
Intake plenum to cylinder head5 Nm / 44.3 in-lb initial, then 10 Nm / 88.5 in-lb finalTwo-stage tightening procedure.
Charge-air duct to throttle body8 Nm / 70.8 in-lbHousing-access reassembly.
Oil-filter cap25 Nm / 18.4 ft-lbDo not overtighten.

Those values come from the B58 oil-filter-housing installation reference, which lists fitment including 2016-2018 340i, 2017-2020 440i, 2017-2020 540i, 2016-2020 740i and 2017-2021 M240i applications, among others. That fitment scope is why the table is not presented as universal for every later B58TU vehicle.

If replacing the assembly, FCP Euro's Genuine BMW B58 oil-filter-housing replacement kit includes the housing-related components and provides vehicle-specific fitment validation. This is a better fit for a stock-style repair than selecting a housing solely because it is advertised as "B58 compatible."

Why the B58 oil-filter housing deserves special care

FCP Euro's current B58 engine guide identifies the plastic oil-filter housing as a known maintenance issue as these engines age, citing oil leaks, coolant leaks, cracked housings and mixed fluids as possible symptoms. The repair is not comparable to the front-mounted housing gasket job on an N55: the B58 assembly sits under the intake/charge-cooler assembly and requires substantially more access work.

On automatic-transmission applications, the housing repair can also disturb the transmission-cooler circuit. The technical installation reference notes that transmission fluid may need to be topped off afterward. That is another reason to follow the complete chassis-specific repair procedure instead of treating the torque table as instructions.

What this B58 guide intentionally leaves out

The B58 spans F-series and G-series BMWs, multiple drivetrains and multiple engine revisions. Wheel bolts, brakes, suspension, transmission mounts, differential hardware and body braces are chassis specifications, not B58 specifications. They belong in the relevant chassis reference.

This page also avoids publishing deeper internal-engine torque values unless they can be tied cleanly to the exact B58 generation and procedure. A shorter table with defensible scope is more useful than a larger table assembled from values that merely look plausible.
